Truck Owners: What to Check on a Toyota Tundra or Other Half-Ton
By Mike, Fastbay Automotive ·
Half-ton trucks like the Toyota Tundra, F-150, Silverado and Ram 1500 are everywhere in the Upstate. Around Pendleton, Clemson and Anderson they pull boats to Lake Hartwell, haul feed and firewood, and sit in traffic on game days. They are tough, but they work hard, and a few parts wear faster than people expect. Here is what I tell truck owners to keep an eye on.
1. Serpentine belt
The serpentine belt runs the alternator, water pump, power steering and A/C on many trucks. When it gets old it cracks across the ribs, glazes, or starts to squeal on cold mornings. If it breaks, the truck can overheat or lose charging fast. We also check the tensioner and pulleys, because a weak tensioner or a noisy pulley will wear out a new belt early.

2. Radiator and heater hoses
Rubber hoses get hard and brittle with heat and age, and Upstate summers are hard on them. A hose can look fine from the top and be cracked underneath or soft and swollen near the clamps. Squeeze them when the engine is cool: they should feel firm, not crunchy or mushy. Watch for coolant drips, a sweet smell, or the temperature gauge creeping up when pulling a trailer.

3. Suspension and steering
Trucks carry a lot of weight, and that wears on struts, shocks, ball joints, tie rods and control arm bushings. Signs to watch for:
- Clunks or knocks over bumps and railroad tracks
- The front end bouncing or floating after a dip
- Steering that feels loose or wanders on the highway
- Uneven or cupped tire wear
- The nose diving hard when you brake, especially with a load

4. The rest of the quick list
- Brakes: trucks are heavy, so pads and rotors work harder, especially if you pull a trailer or haul heavy loads
- Fluids: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission and differential fluid if you pull a trailer often
- Tires: pressure, tread depth and the load rating for what you haul
- Battery and charging: heat is hard on batteries
Let us take a look
If you drive a Tundra or any half-ton, a once-over before summer, before hunting season or before a long trip is a good habit. We will check the belt, hoses, suspension and brakes and send you an estimate with photos. Nothing gets done until you approve it.
